Quad City Red Ribbon Coalition
The Quad City Red Ribbon Coalition is committed to
the creation of a drug-free community. It was formed in response
to concerns that anti-drug efforts in the Quad Cities lacked
unity and consistency. As a result, the Center for Alcohol &
Drug Services, Inc. (CADS) invited representatives from all
walks of life and both sides of the river to join forces to
battle a common enemy that threatens our youth, our communities,
and our nation’s future.
The Coalition is made-up of representatives from all segments
of the community, including law enforcement, schools, religious
organization, social service agencies, senior citizens, youth,
government, media, and businesses. It takes its name from the
national Red Ribbon Celebration, the national Family
Partnership’s grassroots campaign to prevent substance abuse.
First celebrated in 1985, Red Ribbon began in response to the
death of Drug Enforcement Administration Agent Enrique “Kiki”
Camarena, who was abducted and killed by drug dealers in 1985
while on duty in Mexico. Today, red ribbons are worn by millions
as a sign of their personal stand against drugs.
The Coalition serves as a springboard for local efforts to
certify Scott County as an Iowa SAFE Community. Offered through
the Governor’s Alliance on Substance Abuse, SAFE provides
communities with the tools they need to develop a positive plan
of action to combat drug use. In an effort to spearhead these
efforts, the Coalition sponsors activities to promote healthy,
drug-free lifestyles, and works to keep the anti-drug message in
the forefront throughout the year.
